Absence seizures are activated by hyperventillation in 80% of patients with the disease with the classical spectacular 3Hz generalized spike and wave discharges. To some extent it is also useful for activating focal abnormalties. Photic stimulation can elicit a paroxysmal response in a significant number of patients with generalized epilepsy including Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.
