EEG IN BEHAVIOURAL DISTURBANCES / VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR

Post-ictal aggression is a well documented condition with profound medico-legal implications. These events characteristically are not isolated events and tend to recur repeatedly , and the behaviour pattern is usually stereotyped uniquely in each individual patient. (Gerard et al, Neurology 1998 Feb 50:2; 384-8) Subacute post-ictal aggression is more likely to occur after a cluster of seizures than after a single ictus. These patients characteristically are very remorseful after the events are over. The EEG is a very useful instrument to identify seizure activity in these individuals whose unacceptable behaviour is outside of their conscious control.
