EEG IN ATAXIA

There is an entity called ARPA (acetazolamide responsive periodic ataxia) characterized by episodes of vertigo, cerebellar ataxia and nystagmus. Abnormal EEG activity including paroxysmal activity is seen in 52% of patients and should suggest the diagnosis. These patients need treatment with acetazolamide instead of anticonvulsants. This is one of those instances where the history taken by the neurologist prior to the EEG makes all the difference.
